Karl Egger’s family and winemaker Sean O’Callaghan bring their shared vision to Sangiovese in the hills around Radda in Chianti.
THE GROWER
After many years visiting Tuscany, Austrian entrepreneur Karl Egger and his family chose a corner of the countryside outside Radda in Chianti for their winery. Tenuta di Carleone began in 2012, within a landscape of wooded hills, streams, olive trees and vineyards planted mainly to Sangiovese.
Sean O’Callaghan joined the project to help create a small artisanal winery with a personal interpretation of the variety. Organic and biodynamic principles guide the vineyard work. In the cellar, fermentation proceeds without added yeasts and the wines are not fined, keeping the approach centred on the grapes and their place of origin.
