Podere Le Ripi
Francesco Illy’s Montalcino project explores biodynamic viticulture, from Brunello to the densely planted, bush-trained Bonsai vineyard.

THE GROWER
Podere Le Ripi is Francesco Illy’s biodynamic winemaking project in Montalcino. Its work combines a close interest in the local landscape with an experimental approach to how vines grow and express their soils.
The Bonsai vineyard is a distinctive example: small, bush-trained vines are planted at 62,500 plants per hectare. Alongside this unusual planting, the estate produces Tuscan wines including the Brunello di Montalcino cuvées Lupi e Sirene and Cielo d’Ulisse. Across the project, attention to the vineyard and its natural balance guides the search for wines that communicate the character of their Montalcino origins.
