THE GROWER

Christian Tschida carries forward four generations of family winemaking in Illmitz, Burgenland. He took over the family’s 10-hectare vineyard at 27, with the ambition to move beyond fixed recipes and give the wines greater freedom to develop.

Healthy soils are the starting point. His vineyards support abundant plant and animal life, reflecting an approach that treats the surrounding ecosystem as part of winegrowing. In the cellar, the wines are allowed time to evolve in barrels and find their own balance. The emphasis is on observation, patience and a willingness to follow the fruit, rather than imposing a predetermined formula.
