Cascina Lieto
Rie and Hiroto Sasaki care for an old vineyard in Castiglione Tinella, producing small quantities with patient, intuitive cellar work.

THE GROWER
Rie and Hiroto Sasaki founded Cascina Lieto in Castiglione Tinella in 2018. Hiroto had lived in Italy since 1997, first in Rome and then in Piedmont from 2016, after working in the export of artisanal wines and food products to Japan. The couple bought a small vineyard more than 55 years old, together with a farmhouse to restore.
Production is around 4,000 bottles a year. Observation and tasting guide the work: Hiroto looks for ripe, brown, crunchy seeds at harvest while preserving the grapes’ acidity. In the cellar, fermentation and maceration unfold slowly. The project combines a small scale with continuous research and close attention to the fruit.
